On May 27, 2007 the US Army Europe Band performed at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery in France. The band performed on the hallowed grounds near Omaha Beach, the resting place of nearly 10,000 American service members who gave their lives during the invasion of Normandy and subsequent liberation of Europe. In spite of heavy rains, thousands of spectators from around the world gathered to pay their respects. After an F-16 fly-over, remarks were given by the Commanding Gerneral of US Army Europe, General David D. McKiernan. The USAREUR Band, along with a French military band, performed chorales during the laying of the wreaths. The ceremony culminated with Staff Sergeant Michael Gainey performing a haunting rendition of taps to honor the fallen heroes.
