History

Summary

The 59th Army Band was first organized in 1861 as the band of the First California Volunteer Infantry. The band has seen service in the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I and World War II. Currently stationed in Sacramento, the band known as 'The Governor's Own' has performed for every governor's inauguration since 1928 and is a regular performer at the State Capitol. It is the only Army band to perform for England's Queen Elizabeth, on her visit to California in 1984. The band also prides itself on being the only National Guard band featured on a nationally produced recording of Army bands. The 59th Army Band has received the State of California Governor’s Outstanding Unit Award on several occasions.
