The United States Army Europe Band & Chorus continued its impressive streak as they captured yet another team title during this year’s Koenigstuhl Run in Heidelberg, Germany on September 16, 2006. The competition, sponsored by the 43rd Signal Battalion, takes the runners up a scenic mountain that overlooks old Heidelberg. The grueling 8.8 kilometer race culminates at the summit where the approximate elevation is 1,800 feet.
Seventeen Soldiers from the Band & Chorus participated, including the CO, Major Andrew Esch, and SGM Marcella Larson. The unit fielded two teams with the “Blue Team” outrunning its closest competition by several minutes to capture the top spot. The first place USAREUR Band & Chorus team members were 1SG Bryan Simpson, SFC Walt Johnston, SSG Daniel Welch, SSG Todd Stubbs, SGT Benjamin Martinelli, SGT Kevin Pick, and SGT Matt Holmes. The team posted an average time of 41 minutes 20 seconds.
In addition, SGT Martinelli won his age group (29 and under) and finished tied for 3rd place overall in the individual competition.
The last time the Band and Chorus did not win the competition was in 2001 when they could not field a team due to performances in Poland.
