Working as the commander of the United States Army Europe Band and Chorus is a very challenging and rewarding experience for LTC Beth Steele, but on September 15th it was even more exciting and humbling. With a crowd of folks ranging from Generals to local civilians, LTC Steele was awarded the Silver Cross of Honor of the Bundeswehr at the Keyes building in Heidelberg, Germany. The award is normally only awarded to German soldiers, but LTC Steele becomes only the fourth American Soldier to receive the award as well as the first band officer to receive it. It was awarded to her for her dedication and support to both the German armed forces and the German civilian communities. During LTC Steele’s comments, she gave all the credit and honor associated with the award to her Soldiers who were responsible for the success of the mission of the USAREUR Band and Chorus. Chief of the German Liaison Command, COL Dirksen presented the award to LTC Steele. During his comments, COL Dirksen stressed how professional and cooperative that LTC Steele was and how professional the USAREUR Band and Chorus always sounded especially when playing the German anthem. The finishing touch for COL Dirksen was having the USAREUR Brass Quintet play both the US and German anthems, flawlessly. Please congratulate LTC Steele and the members of the USAREUR Band and Chorus on receiving this prestigious award.
